Assam State Secondary Healthcare Initiative for Service Delivery Transformation (ASSIST) Project organized one day workshop on “Management of Bio-Medical Waste at Hospitals” on 19th May 2023 at Assam Administrative Staff College, Khanapara, Guwahati.
Objective of the workshop was to mainstream and safeguard the interest of Environment as well as Occupational Health and Safety of the HCF Staff. At the same time, to orient and motivate the Government hospitals to fulfill all the regulatory responsibilities such as to take authorization from Pollution Control Board under stipulated norms.
Around 170 participants attended the workshop including DHS, DME, Pollution Control Board, Assam (PCBA), NHM and AHIDMS from all over Assam. Dr. Siddharth Singh I.A.S., Commissioner & Secretary to the Govt. of Assam, Medical Education and Research Department and Project Director of AHIDMS chaired the inaugural function. Dr Arup Kumar Misra, Chairman, Pollution Control Board, Assam; Dr. Anup Kumar Barman, Director of Medical Education, GoA and Dr. Nilmadhab Das, Director of Health Services, GoA were the Guests of Honor. The booklet on ‘Guidelines for Bio-Medical Waste Management at Heath Care Facilities’ was unveiled by Dr. Siddharth Singh in presence of all the dignitaries.
Major outcomes from the workshop are (i) Need for detailed trainings to the health care workers on BMW Management; (ii) Need for detailed training to the actual BMW handlers. To take it forward, ASSIST will plan for Training of Trainers (ToT) on the above outcomes so that the trainers can train the staff at their respective district HCFs. It was also felt that such workshops can also be held at the regional level on a regular basis so that BMW Management is accorded the importance that it deserves at the field as well as policy level.
